Anne Hathaway had a hilarious moment on Instagram, teasing her former costar Jeremy Strong about his unique outfit at the 2025 Golden Globes — a look that bore an uncanny resemblance to her iconic Princess Diaries character, Mia Thermopolis.
“Sweetheart, I’m not mad you borrowed it,” Hathaway wrote in a cheeky post on Monday. The post featured a side-by-side comparison of Strong’s turquoise velvet bucket hat and the bucket hat Mia famously wore to cover her disastrous haircut in the beloved 2001 coming-of-age film.

She added, “But I didn’t totally realize you were going to change the col… anyway, not important, congrats on your well-deserved nom for The Apprentice!!! 💚”
Jeremy Strong’s Bold Globes Look
Strong — nominated for his role as Roy Cohn in Ali Abbasi’s Donald Trump biopic The Apprentice — sported a bold turquoise velvet suit, matching bucket hat, and shades by Jacques Marie Mage, courtesy of Loro Piana. The look turned heads on the red carpet and, evidently, gave Hathaway some nostalgic inspiration.
In the Princess Diaries, Hathaway’s character Mia tries to hide her “charm school makeover gone wrong” under a similar bucket hat. Fans immediately picked up on the connection, with Hathaway’s playful jab sparking a wave of laughs in the comments.
A Shared History: Hathaway and Strong’s Friendship

The pair first worked together in James Gray’s Armageddon Time in 2022 and again in Steven Knight’s conceptual thriller Serenity in 2019. Hathaway has previously called their friendship “gorgeous” in interviews.
“Our lives kind of opened up in a similar way at a similar time,” Hathaway told PEOPLE in 2022, noting that they both became parents around the same time. Strong fondly recalled a family vacation where “my second daughter learned how to walk in the house we were sharing.”
Strong’s Globes Nomination and the Night’s Big Winners
Strong earned his nomination for portraying the infamous Roy Cohn, a closeted lawyer and political fixer, in The Apprentice, but the film left the night empty-handed. However, Strong’s costar, Sebastian Stan, won Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for his role in Aaron Schimberg’s A Different Man.
Meanwhile, Emilia Pérez, a trans cartel musical, dominated the evening with four wins, including Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña and Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
Princess Diaries Nostalgia Revival
It’s no surprise that Strong’s outfit would unintentionally reference a film like The Princess Diaries. The early 2000s fashion revival is in full swing, and Garry Marshall’s iconic movie remains a touchstone of Y2K style.
While Hathaway herself wasn’t nominated for a Globe this year, her performances in The Idea of You and Mother’s Instinct are sure to keep her in the awards conversation.
And, if Jeremy Strong ever needs more style tips, it looks like Hathaway’s wardrobe is open — as long as he returns her bucket hat next time.
