Donald Trump Jr. to Visit Greenland as Trump Revives Push for U.S. Takeover: “MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!”

Donald Trump Jr. is set to visit Greenland on Tuesday amid renewed controversy sparked by Donald Trump’s revived ambition to acquire the Danish territory for the United States. The soon-to-be president made the announcement on his social media platform, Truth Social, declaring Greenland a strategic necessity for America’s security and prosperity.

“MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN”

Trump announced the trip with his signature flair, writing:
“Greenland is an incredible place, and the people will benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our Nation. We will protect it, and cherish it, from a very vicious outside World. MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!”

According to CNN, the Danish government confirmed that Trump Jr.’s visit is unofficial, describing it as a private tour of Greenland’s “magnificent areas and sights”. However, the timing and the elder Trump’s statements have triggered backlash from Greenland’s government and Denmark’s royal family.

Greenland Pushes Back: “We Are Not for Sale”

Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Egede wasted no time in rejecting Trump’s renewed proposal.
“We are not for sale and never will be for sale,” Egede said in a statement, echoing the strong opposition voiced in 2019 when Trump first floated the idea.

Even the King of Denmark has responded, recently adjusting the country’s royal coat of arms to prominently feature symbols of Greenland and the Faroe Islands — a subtle but clear rebuke to Trump’s ambitions.

Trump Insists Greenlanders Are Secretly “MAGA”

Despite Greenland’s clear stance, Trump claimed to have support on the ground.
“I am hearing that the people of Greenland are ‘MAGA,’” he posted, attaching a video of a lone Greenlander sporting a MAGA hat and saying:
“Buy Greenland! We don’t want to be colonized by the Danish government anymore.”

The video, however, appeared to be an isolated instance and was widely mocked online.

Why Greenland? Strategic and Military Interests

Trump’s push to acquire Greenland is rooted in strategic military interests. The island’s location provides key access to the Arctic and serves as a critical early warning outpost for detecting missile threats from Russia.

The U.S. already operates Thule Air Base, the world’s northernmost American military installation, in Greenland. The base plays a vital role in missile detection and space surveillance.

A History of U.S. Interest in Greenland

The United States has long eyed Greenland for its strategic value. In 1946, President Harry Truman even offered $100 million in gold to buy the island from Denmark, but the offer was declined.

More recently, as climate change opens up new shipping routes and resource opportunities in the Arctic, the island’s geopolitical importance has only grown.

Danish Government’s Subtle Pushback

Denmark, which has sovereignty over Greenland, has signaled its disapproval in more ways than one. The decision to highlight Greenland and the Faroe Islands on the royal coat of arms was seen as a symbolic message to both Greenlanders and foreign powers that these territories remain integral to Denmark’s identity.

What’s Next?

While Trump Jr.’s visit may be unofficial, it signals that the Trump administration is far from done with its Greenland ambitions. The visit could stir diplomatic tensions between the U.S. and Denmark, but Trump appears unfazed by the backlash.

Whether his efforts to “MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN” will resonate with Greenlanders — or further alienate them — remains to be seen.
